Modeling Sources and Systems (online course) Aug. 6-8, 2024

SKU: Modeling

This three-day online short course shows engineers in illumination optics how to get their ray-tracing models right. Participants should be familiar with the optics concepts covered in our course “Understanding Light for Illumination."

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • make educated choices which source model to use
  • build well working source models, including spectra, from often mediocre quality of LED vendor ray files
  • understand how Monte Carlo ray-tracing software “thinks”
  • understand the tradeoffs between various surface and material modeling options
  • apply the concepts covered in our course “Understanding Light for Illumination” to source and system modeling
  • choose which optical effects to model, and which to neglect

Attendees do not need LightTools/Lucidshape or other ray tracing software installed.

In most cases, you'll have been redirected here because you've  registered for this course with Synopsys, Inc. We gratefully acknowledge Synopsys' help with registration.

  • Dates and times

This course will be held via Zoom in three sessions, three hours each.

    Aug. 6, 7, 8, 2024 (Tue, Wed, Thu)
All sessions at same time of day:
    8:00 to 11:00 a.m.                Pacific, which is
    11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.       Eastern, which is
    17:00 to 20:00                       Central European

  • Zoom / Hardware / Software

The course is held via Zoom. Meeting invitations including the Zoom link will be sent out well in time before the courses starts. We recommend to participate using the Zoom Desktop client, the connection tends to be more stable than with just a browser (which works also). It is not a must, but greatly appreciated, if you have a working web cam: The course is much more lively and interactive when we see each other. A second monitor is also a good idea, to show the main window with the course material on one screen and the participants, the chat and other stuff on a secondary monitor.

  • Applicable discounts

When you book all four courses together here, you will receive a 10% discount compared to individual prices.

When two or more persons from the same company book any course, the second, third etc. person will receive a 60% discount. Effectively, that means an overall 30% discount for two, an overall 40% discount for three persons etc. Please contact us at to receive a discount code.

There is a small number of seats on each course reserved for students or faculty members, at a substantial case-by-case discount. Please contact us at to discuss.
